The head of the British administration in India was known as the Governor–General from 1773 to 1858, and as Viceroy and Governor–General from 1858 to 1947. Mountbatten stayed on as Governor–General for a short time after independence, and was succeeded in 1948 by Chakravarti Rajagopalachari. Rajaji (or CR), as he was known for short (!) was replaced in 1950 by the first President of India: Rajendra Prasad.
Mountbatten was therefore the last Viceroy, and the first Governor–General after independence, but not the last Governor–General.
